Beastie Boys
"To The 5 Boroughs"
CD, Capitol, June 2004
No doubt, "To The 5 Boroughs" was one of the 10 best releases of 2004. Fifteen solid tracks that cross genres & manages to still sound fresh. If you had any doubts that these guys were getting "old", this will put those doubts to rest. The Beastie Boys, still kill. They still know how to combine samples, music, raps, beats and sounds into a cohesive result. My friend Doc was the biggest Beastie Boys fan I knew. I wish Doc could hear this now, cuz this CD is possibly the Beastie Boys best. Punk rockers who may have decided that they don't like rap, should take special note to "An Open Letter To NYC" where the Beastie Boys sample the Dead Boys "Sonic Reducer". It's precious and makes this mandatory. Punk rockers will also enjoy "Hey F$%* You". "To The 5 Boroughs" takes you from the desperate sounding, to the powerfully energetic. I would request that you own "To The 5 Boroughs". I can't stop listening to it! I also enjoy the fact that they actually include the lyrics. That was nice of them to do that.
