DANAVA

"Danava"

CD, Kemano Records, October 2006

There have been a handlful of bands in 2004, 2005 & 2006 that have gained attention by attempting to grab a hold of various rock, metal and psychedelic influences and transform them into something modern. Something the kids can latch on to or that the media can manipulate in to a trend. I think the results have been too "glamy". Portland OR has given us Danava (DON-UH-VUH), who combine these influences, but I believe there is an integrity to their music that should separate them from this attempt at a trend. Their music pays direct tribute to so many 60s and 70s bands that never registered on most music fan's radar. As a matter of fact, they play a particular style of music that I normally associate with severely costly LPS only available on internet auction sites or in obscure record stores and at specialty record conventions. Records that have been out of print longer than most have been alive. Whether they are playing a space jam that lasts so long you forgot when it started (the disc has 5 songs clocking in at 45 minutes), or an early Sabbath meets Budgie meets St. Vitus rocker, Danava gives fans of these now ancient influences a new CD they can purchase rather than chasing down a 35 or 40 year old piece of vinyl (though this is also a wonderful hobby).
