Dickies

“All This And Puppet Stew”

CD, Fat Records

With the track record of the Dickies pretty much being not up to par (to say the least) since “Stukas Over Disneyland” (1983), which was their last great release in my opinion, this was bound to be one of those CDs that I would approach with great caution. By the way, in case you didn’t know, The Dickies are one of the greatest punk bands ever. “Dawn of the Dickies” (1980) and “The Incredible Shrinking Dickies” (1979) which have recently been reissued, are 2 mandatory purchases if you don’t own them. So, upon first listen to “All This and Puppet Stew”, the first song is pretty weird. But the rest was amazing! High energy with lots of hooks. Just like the first two albums. But wait, was that just because I wanted this record to be great? Ok, a second listen. Same result. Ok, third listen. Same result. Ok 10th listen. Same result. Yes! The return of the Dickies to their amazing prime! The guitar sound on “Marry Me, Ann” is very punk.
