Heads vs. Breakers

"Apathy is the New Black"

CD, New Day Rising, January 2004

I like to listen to a CD before reading the bio, liner notes or lyrics. Sometimes I can guess what bands members were in previously or what region of the world they come from or at least their influences... my little game... Well, upon first (uneducated) listen to Heads Vs. Breakers, it was clear that they were going for an emotional post punk, hardcore, sort of California sound. It was also clear that they were not from California. The sound was more East Coast, probably Jersey or Long Island. Then I checked, and I was right (Long Island). Heads vs. Breakers reminds me of a cross between Latex Generation (the band name almost seems like something L.G. would talk about, and there seems to be a certain lightness about the band, though I can't really tell cuz I don't have the patience to attempt to read the small funky font they used for the lyrics) and Lifetime (vocals, structure) and have an ex Silent Majority member. It's upbeat despite the CD's title. Makes me want to pull out my Lifetime records.
