Modest Mouse

"Good News For People Who Love Bad News"

CD, Epic, April 2004

I bought my first Modest Mouse record in 1996, yet none of their releases has settled with me as something I repeatedly listen to, that is until this new disc. Combining every influence from the Pixies to Jesus Lizard to the Minutemen, to Tom Waits to instrumentation that could have come from the Jungle Book soundtrack, Modest Mouse have constructed a disc that will surely stand the test of time as a classic. The single "Float On" (not a cover of the Floaters classic) demonstrates the creative use and variety of instruments and sounds Modest Mouse uses to compile their songs. It also demonstrates their great lyrics, songwriting and ability to make the variety fit together. It is the kind of music that can change the way you think and involves the listener in the music. "Ocean Breathes Salty" and the rest of the tracks fill out the disc as a complete listen. Something you'd want to listen to from beginning to end.
