Stiff Little Fingers
"Guitar and Drum"
CD, Kung Fu Records, July 2004
SLF is one of those bands that if you say that you like punk, you better damn well have some of their records in your collection. So if you don't, I suggest you get to work and at least purchase "All The Best". You could then follow that up with "Inflammable Material", "Nobody's Heroes", "Hanx!" and "Go For It" etc... all from the late 70s and early 80s. Everyone from the Dropkick Murphys to Naked Raygun have covered SLF songs and sang their praises. So should everyone who enjoys punk. These new songs are instant classics, just as you would expect from a band that still generates excitement from their fans 27 years or so into their career. The hooks are infectious, the rock riffs are right on and the old punk tradition that SLF demands is carried proudly and true. The first two tracks let you know exactly where Jake Burns and company stand. "Guitar and Drum" pledges their allegiance to the music they love even in an age when almost everything seems to be motivated from the wrong place. "Strummerville" is an ode to one of their (and punk's - generally speaking) main influences (Joe Strummer). The entire CD is a non stop, memorable, hook filled, powerful punk and rock listen. "Guitar and Drum" maintains a fresh sound while retaining their dedication to their roots. Stands up right alongside their classic songs. A great addition to the distinguished SLF catalog.
