Shades Apart

“Sonic Boom”

CD, Republic / Universal Records

The world of guitar driven pop keeps coming. Shades Apart has been dabbling on the edges of punk for years, but now they seem to be dabbling on the edge of major hits. I would suppose they are one video away from being the next 3 Doors Down or Train, though they also don’t forget that Bad Religion is a good influence. My choice for a hit song would be “Beat by Beat”. A good riff, some good rockin’ precision, a good breakdown and a nice catchy chorus. I like a good hit as much as the next lover of music, but as a whole, the CD has some ho hum tracks (a bit too ballad-like for my tastes) as do most hit pop CDs. Like the next track on the disc, the chorus to “Gravity” actually irritates me. “Gravity seems to be malfunctioning, gravity took a holiday…”. Ughh. This is why I miss the 45rpm. I remember buying 45s as a kid with my allowance. I’d only buy the albums if there were more than one good single on it, like the Cars or Talking Heads. Otherwise I’d buy the 45. Sometimes I’d buy the 45s and the albums cuz they were so good, case in point, KC and the Sunshine Band and Chic.
